Times and Seasons. Volume 4.

Nauvoo: John Taylor & Wilford Woodruff, 1842. First edition. Cloth. Brown cloth spine over marbled boards - undoubtedly a new spine added many years ago and new endsheets added as well. The corners of covers are worn and rubbed and the original leather is gone. This copy lacks the title page, leaf 1/2 and 382/83. The first extant leaf (3/4) is glued to the front endsheet and some text is unable to be read, the top of this page is chipped as well; minor chipping to top right edge of first several pages. Numbers 2-24 are very clean and nice.

The year covered by this volume of Times and Seasons-vol 4-was one of the most complex yet in Mormon history. As the volume begins, Joseph Smith had just returned to Nauvoo from hiding while bankruptcy and extradition attempts were underway. The legal matters were discharged but, if anything, matters became chaotic. The mid-part of 1843 was perhaps the highwater mark of polygamy in Nauvoo-in July the revelation (later D&C 132) was committed to paper and read to the high council. The periodical would occasionally hint at the troubles, as in the reprint of an article (p. 28) reporting on the activities of notorious disaffected Mormon leader John C. Bennett. A fascinating window into a complex and colorful period of Mormon history. Condition: Very good. Item #40558
