A Child of the Sea; and Life Among the Mormons

Beaver Island Historical Society, 1983. Reprint. Paperback. 229 pp. Photoreprint of 1905 original. Bottom corner creased.

A CHILD OF THE SEA is a 19th century woman's recollection of a life spent near the waters of upper Lake Michigan. She combines tales and legends with her own memories to provide a vivid and charming account of the area and times.

Elizabeth Whitney Williams' family lived on Beaver Island for several years during the early days of the mid-century settlement of a Mormon group. After being forced to leave by pressures from this group, the family was able to return when the religious body was expelled. The author is able to draw upon the early childhood memories and to retell tales told to her by many who were affected by "King Strang" and his Kingdom of St. James to provide one view of the Mormon days on the isolated island. Mrs. Williams eventually became lighthouse keeper at the harbor station of Beaver Island and served many years there before being transferred to a similar post at Little Traverse Bay.
