The Doctrine and Covenants is a wonderful book filled with a wide variety of content-including revelations dictated to the Prophet Joseph Smith Jr. by the Lord (like section 1), the words of an angel (section 2), visions (sections 76, 110, 137, and 138, for example), minutes of a meeting (section 102), letters (such as sections 121-23, 127-28), ancient manuscripts (section 7 and portions of section 93), a temple dedicatory prayer (section 109), a policy statement (section 134), and an account of Joseph and Hyrum's martyrdom (section 135).
As President Ezra Taft Benson taught, "The Doctrine and Covenants is a glorious book of scripture given directly to our generation. It contains the will of the Lord for us in these last days that precede the Second Coming of Christ. It contains many truths and doctrines not fully revealed in other scripture. The Lord's counsel regarding our responsibility to read and study the sections of the Doctrine and Covenants is clear and direct. We are directed to "search these commandments, for they are true and faithful, and the prophecies and promises which are in them shall all be fulfilled" (Doctrine and Covenants 1:37). We are then commanded to "hearken" to the word of the Lord. President Russell M. Nelson has observed, "The very first word in the Doctrine and Covenants is hearken. It means to listen with the intent to obey.' To hearken means to 'hear Him'—to hear what the Savior says and then to heed His counsel.
