By mid-Dec 1889, George Q. Cannon was sweating a deadline. He had promised his colleague, Heber J. Grant, that he would write a piece for the Christmas issue of the Salt Lake Herald. As the crunch intensified, he-as he often did-drafted a son (John Q. in this case) to help him write it. After publication, Grant informed him that they had sold out of the issue and were planning to issue his article in pamphlet form. That did not materialize but Cannon printed it himself under his George Q. Cannon & Sons imprint. To his narrative of being "hunted and driven by blood-thirsty men" was appended the December 1889 manifesto (denying a host of things: blood atoning apostates, voting irregularities, political hegemony, etc) and the watershed "Official Declaration" now known as "the" Manifesto which signaled the beginning of the end of "authorized" polygamy. The first edition of this pamphlet was issued in September 1890 (sold for a whopping five cents), making it one of the earliest standalone publications of the 1890 Manifesto. This second edition is retypeset-maintaining pagination and even paragraph structure-with no apparent changes. Either version is extremely scarce-this is the first time we have seen one. Condition: Very good. Item #39754
