Grafting In - Signed by President Howard W. Hunter; A History of the Latter-day Saints in the Holy Land
Murray: The Jerusalem Branch (Roylance Printing), 1989. Hardcover. xii,161pp. Inscribed by two of those that oversaw the design and construction of the Jerusalem Center, Fred and Winona Schwendiman in which they indicate that this is 1 of the first 50 copies of this book. Mormon involvement in Israel began with Orson Hyde's visit and dedication of the land for missionary work. Beginning in the late 1960s a permanent presence was established, with a combination of several expat families and BYU student groups. By 1972, a formal branch was organized. Growth in the area was marginal, largely due to the frowning on of proselytizing. Various plans for a permanent student center were explored and, after a very fraught process, the Jerusalem Center was finally opened in 1987. This fascinating history covers all the twists and turns of the often difficult experience of Mormons living in Israel. This copy is inscribed by Fred and Nonie Schwendiman-drawing on his experience with building at BYU (including the MTC), Fred oversaw construction of the Jerusalem Center. This copy-one of the first fifty-is also signed by Howard Hunter and James Faust who both played important roles in the growth of Mormonism in the area and particularly the negotiations surrounding the center.
