Latter-Day Saint Biographical Encyclopedia, Volume 1

Salt Lake City: The Andrew Jenson History Company, 1901. First edition. Leather. 828 pp., Flake 4413. Frontis. 3/4 leather over boards with title in gilt on front cover; decorative endsheets. This copy has a new spine as the original was completely missing. Signed inside the front cover by G. Homer Durham on the decorative front endsheet; inscribed on first blank endsheet, "Presented to Sister Susa Young Gates by her friend and Fellow - Laborer in the great Field of Church Literature. Andrew Jenson Sept. 15, 1915." Signed and dated below, G. Homer Durham June, 1965. There are several notations on the page detailing Brigham Young Jun. as well as Jacob Gates, husband to Susa.
Minor staining to top edge of book with some staining and rippling evident along top edge of pages of the first 25 pages or so.

As association copies go, this one is quite notable. The book-bound in attractive ¾ leather-was first given to Susa Young Gates (writer, suffragist and, of course, daughter of Brigham Young) by Andrew Jenson with a nice note to her. The book then went to her daughter, Leah Dunford, married to apostle John A. Widtsoe. Next, it went to G. Homer Durham (who had married their daughter, Leah Eudora Widtsoe) who signed his name twice, just for good measure. The book itself is a fantastic resource, with biographical sketches of all early Mormon leaders (including Susa's father Brigham and brother Brigham Jr.). To have such a fun collection of signatures makes it even that more collectible. Condition: Very good. Item #38259
