From the 1930s to the 1950s, Mormonism produced a group of talented authors-later identified with the larger "lost generation"-that achieved success on a national scale. In addition to non-fiction writers like Fawn Brodie were a number of novelists like Vardis Fisher and Virginia Sorensen. Maurine Whipple-a native of St. George, Utah-was right at the center of this cohort. With encouragement from the vice president of the publisher, Whipple applied for and received a grant for first-time authors in 1938. Three years later, The Giant Joshua appeared in print. While this later, mass-market paperback might not look so appealing, the inscription from Whipple is quite uncommon to see. Condition: Near very good. Item #11439
