Frontiersman: Abner Blackburn's Narrative

Salt Lake City: University of Utah Press, 1992. Cloth/dj. 309pp. Signed by Bagley. From the Library Journal - This is a superbly edited account of a pioneer's adventures during his seven trips across the Great Plains between 1843 and 1851 and his experiences in the early Mormon Church and the Mexican War. Bagley has taken Blackburn's diary covering the 21-year period from 1830 to 1851, divided it into ten chapters, and given each a substantial introduction. His preface, afterword, epilog, appendixes, and extensive bibliography combine with the historical document to make this a very credible work. Punctuation and spelling have been improved for the sake of clarity, but the original flavor of this simple, honest pioneer's account has been maintained. In an 1894 letter to his niece, Blackburn remarks that he is "awaiting to find some suitable scholar to assist me with the preparing it in shape." His wait may seem overly long, but he would have been pleased with the results. New. Item #5923
