Nauvoo House Association Stock Certificates, set

Nauvoo: Nauvoo House Association (Printed in Times and Seasons office), 1841. Document. First issue: 2 $50 certificates (#347 & 348) - signed by John Snider (secretary) George Miller (president) February 11th, 1841 - 5 x 7.75"; Second issue 1 $50 & 1 $100 certificate (unsigned and unnumbered) - 6.75 x 7.75". Almost uncirculated condition of second issue. Both sets of notes have a few small creases and minor soiling and the two $50 certificates were folded horizontally in half and there's a small tear at the right edge along that crease.

George Miller was converted to the church by John Taylor in 1839 while he lived in McDonough County, Illinois. He served as the Presiding Bishop while in Nauvoo and also as one of the four trustees in the Nauvoo House Association as well as its President. This association was approved to sell stock for the purpose of constructing a hotel in Nauvoo by the Illinois State Assembly on February 23, 1841 (note that the stock was issued before this approval was obtained). The other trustees were Lyman Wight, John Snider and Peter Haws. These men were authorized to sell $150,000 worth of stock from which proceeds the hotel would be built. Each share was valued at $50.00 and no shareholder could own more than 300 shares. Since the hotel was to be constructed on land donated by Joseph Smith, he (and his heirs) were to retain a number of rooms for their personal use.

John Snider was converted to the church by Parley P. Pratt in 1836 in Toronto. He served a mission to England with Heber C. Kimball and others in 1837 and a second mission from 1842–43. He was the secretary of the Nauvoo House Association. Snider later died in Salt Lake. Condition: Very good. Item #36657
