Item #35862 Intimate Chronicle.; The Journals of William Clayton. George D. Smith, ed.

Intimate Chronicle.; The Journals of William Clayton

Salt Lake City: Signature Books, 1991. Hardcover. 580 pp. Signature's significant diaries series. Limited to 500 copies of which this is #240. Notes inside front cover. Scattered pencil marking and highlighting throughout.

From the moment he arrived in Joseph Smith's Nauvoo, William Clayton's diary is one of the most important sources for the expanding complexity. While he comments on many events and developments, the entries on polygamy (both Joseph Smith and his own) are indispensable to historians. This is also a book where the backstory is almost as interesting as the book itself with First Presidency clearances, stolen and photocopied manuscripts and even a trial (and appeal). Not just one of the more difficult volumes from the Significant Mormon Diaries series to find, it is also a fascinating read. Condition: Near very good. Item #35862
